According to some US publications, Weinstein, 72, has chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of cancer that affects white blood cells and bone marrow.

“It is both troubling and unacceptable that such private and confidential health matters have become a subject of public discourse,” the spokesperson continued.

“Out of respect for Mr Weinstein’s privacy, we will offer no further comment.”

“The CPS has decided to discontinue criminal proceedings against Harvey Weinstein after reviewing the evidence in this case,” said Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS special crime and counter-terrorism branch, on Thursday.
