Real Madrid pays tribute to Petrovic

Real Madrid was present at the Zagreb Arena for the memorial service for Drazen Petrovic, a legend in both our club and international basketball who passed away in 1993. The ceremony featured a match between Hezonja’s Croatian national team and a European players’ squad that included Tavares and Musa. Felipe Reyes and Alberto Herreros, the basketball division’s technical director, were also present.

There was a unique moment during the match when Real Madrid honored Petrovic. It happened in the second quarter during a timeout. Asa Petrovic, the brother of the renowned Madrid player, was given a memorial plaque and a team jersey bearing his name and the number five that Petrovic wore for Madrid by Herreros and Felipe Reyes when they proceeded to the center of the court. Villalobos, his old colleague during the season he played for our squad, and Luka Doncic, another star of the club, were also present for the ceremony.

Three-point field goal

There had been a three-point shootout earlier during the intermission. Hezonja and Musa, two Madrid players, had yet another fantastic moment. Both competed in the final, with the Croatian winning.

During his stint as a player for Real Madrid in 1988–1989, legend Dragan Petrovic made a lasting impression. With 62 points against Snaidero Caserta in the 1989 European Cup Winners’ Cup final, he had one of the finest performances in history. He won one Copa del Rey and one European Cup Winners’ Cup while wearing the Madrid outfit. At the age of 28, Petrovic perished in an automobile accident on June 7, 1993.
