Set in Ravenswood, Chicago, the Abbott Alkaloidal Company was created in 1888 by Wallace Abbott (1857-1921), a 30 year old University of Michigan graduate (1885). During that period, he operated a pharmacy and worked as a physician. His invention was the formulation of the active ingredient of alkaloid medicinal plants, such as codeine, morphine, quinine, and strychnine, into little “dosimetric granules.” This allowed for more accurate and reliable patient dosing than the earlier, unstable liquid forms.* [5] From Ravenswood to North Chicago, the business relocated in 1922.

1817–1821: The Catholepistemiad

The University of Michigan can be traced back to August 26, 1817,[1] when acting governor and secretary William Woodbridge, chief justice Augustus B. Woodward, and judge John Griffin signed a legislative act creating the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, in the Territory of Michigan.[11] : 117 By way of a fresh legislation in 1821, the university was established as a “body politic and corporate,”[11]: 117  preserving its corporate status with a number of charter amendments.[12]: 11 “School of Universal Knowledge” is a possible translation for the neologism “Catholepistemiad,” which comes from a combination of Greek and Latin elements.
